Bulukumba

Bulukumba is a small city located in southeast coast near Bone bay of south Sulawesi. Bulukumba is a capital city of Bulukumba regency in south sulawes, a strong hold of the Bugis and Makassar clans of Sulawesi. It was known as one of the busiest trading port in east Indonesia region in spices trading during Dutch occupation  

Bulukumba had been in contact with religious teachings of Moslem since beginning of17^th century brought by three major scholars Waliyullah from the island Sumatra each Dato Tiro (Bulukumba ) Dato Ribandang ( Makassar ) and Dato Patimang in ( Luwu ). The essence of their Islamic teaching was tasawuff for religious awareness and mobilized them to Zuhut attitudes beliefs, sacred force inside and outside, as well as survivors of the world and hereafter in the context of monotheism Appasewang ( to God the Alighty Allah).

Bulukumba community known as religious community when islam was first brought by a man Abdul Jawad who later entitled as Alkatib Maulana Bungsu few centuries before the three scholars from Sumatra came in.

  

In the other history version the man named Abdul Jawad has an original name Nurdin Ariyani  or Alkatib Maulana Bungsu came to south Sulawesi with his two friends named Katib Makmur by the name of ri Bandang and Katib Sulaiman as Dato Patimang. Those three persons were pupils or students of Pesantren Sunan Giri name from one of Wali Songo ( the nine guardian who spread islam in Java during these period) and the founder of the Kingdom Guru Kedaton which was located in Kediri east of Java. Sunan Giri has several nicknames namely Raden Paku, King Satmata, Sultan Abd Al- Faqh, Ainul Yaqin and Joko Samudra. He was buried in Giri village of Kebomas, Gresik, east Java.

In the AD 1600s. Abdul Jawad broadcast islam in Bulukumba and surrounding areas . the first king in Tiro Kingdom was Lanru Daeng Biasa islamicised with the title Karaeng Ambibia. Lanru Daeng Biasa was the fourth grandchild of Karaeng Malaja named Karaeng Sapo Batu was the first king in Tiro. The tomb of Abdul Jawad at Hila-Hila. Bontotiro district later known as Datotiro till today still well preserved and many people come to visit.

   

Islam belief is well developed within the people of Bulukumba as it marks with Islamic schools, mosques are built in this area. Those are harmoniously living in the area of Bulukumba.

Population of Bulukumba is domantly from Bugis clans of south Sulawesi  with a centre boat carpenters are centralized in Ara village about 10km east of Bira beach.
